It's not surprising that a Sunni Muslim country like ours ended up with a toothless judiciary while a Hindu majority country ended up with a despotic judiciary.
I would still say the influence of the Indian judiciary will be a problem in the long run. Unfortunately, our notion of a secular Republic is heavily influenced by India whose secularism is very different compared to the USA or France.
The people who rebuilt Germany and Japan after WW2 were prominent leaders in previous fascist governments. If the post war administrations had purged the government like you're suggesting both of these countries would not have succeeded.
This is the problem with Bengalis. We never get any conservatives just second rate utopianism.
I'm also against most of the constitutional reforms. Any and all reforms should be passed only after referendum with a 60+% minimum threshold.
I don't think we were suggesting the administration needs to be purged. If anything, we said exactly the opposite -- that while the entire state machinery is staffed with incompetent partisan hacks to such an extent that the governor of the central bank fled when the regime fell, we cannot afford to repeat the mistakes of 1972-style wholesale purges.
Apologies I should have clarified. The above comment expresses my frustration with the mainstream opinion in Bangladesh. I understand the people in the podcast are not pro a full scale purge. Just jail some of the worst actors and amnesty for the rest.
