There is a lot of distortions in the Indian market. The prices of staple are apparently too low and propped up by government programs like MSP. India spends like 2.2-2.5% of gdp on agriculture subsidies. Something like 600 million people get food rations from the state. It's probably better to compare more liberal markets like Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia.
